Run and Roam the Runway – YYC Is Ready for Takeoff

Wednesday, June 25th, 2014

As Brookline’s summer intern, I’ve discovered that one of the best things about agency life is our involvement with diverse and unique events.  Over the past several months, the Brookline team has been busy helping to plan the grand opening celebration of Canada’s newest and longest runway.

The idea began in November 2013 when the Calgary Airport Authority asked Calgarians to share their ideas on how to celebrate the runway’s launch through the 30 Days, 300 Ideas campaign. From the hundreds of ideas submitted, Run and Roam the Runway was born.

The event kicked off on Saturday, June 14 with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to walk or run the runway. Participants could choose to run the whole length of 8.4k or the shortened version of 5k. Over 1,400 people laced up their sneakers and came out to celebrate!

Before hitting the start line, Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod from BodyBreak were on hand to help get everyone warmed up before hitting the finish line.

Even Mayor Nenshi stopped by to share his congratulations with the crowd and had the honour of cutting the ribbon to mark the runway’s official opening.

On Sunday, the festivities continued with Roam the Runway. Roam the Runway featured YYC Food Trucks, kids’ activities, vintage aircraft, and experiential zones from WestJet and Air Canada.

Guests even had the chance to sign their name on the runway before the first plane takes flight on June 28.

At Brookline, we couldn’t be more grateful to be a part of this amazing, once-in-a-lifetime event! From driving golf carts down the new runway, to stretching with Hal and Joanne from BodyBreak, to daily team huddles, it was an amazing experience.

Thanks to everyone who helped make Run and Roam the Runway a huge success. We’re happy to say YYC is ready for takeoff!
