Paula Speaks With Students From Across Canada

Tuesday, March 25th, 2014

Over the past month I’ve had the opportunity to speak to some talented students from across the country. In late February, I served as the keynote speaker at the Enactus Regional Exposition held in Calgary, where a hotel ballroom full of energized, enterprising, inspiring students from across western Canada celebrated their accomplishments.

Enactus Canada is a community of student, academic and business leaders enabling progress through entrepreneurial action. I’ve been involved with the organization for a long time – as a student, staff member, volunteer, advisor and donor, and was humbled to have the opportunity to share my story with them.

Next, I conducted a guest lecture via Skype with some advertising students at St. Lawrence College in Kingston, Ontario, where we talked about what it takes to make it in public relations and how the media landscape is changing. They came armed with some great questions and good conversation.

Read on for a sampling of the points I shared with these groups about life, career, adventure and maintaining a great attitude, even in times of adversity.

Know your compass – Listen to your intuition, and don’t be afraid of encountering new or different situations – it’s how we grow. Learn to get outside your comfort zone.

Grit – It’s one of my favourite words when it comes to charging ahead in your career. It’s defined as “perseverance and passion for long-term goals.” Do you have enough of it?

Stay eager, especially in times of change – Change in the world of public relations is inevitable. Anticipate change, and learn to continuously adapt to changing situations. Stay eager, and you’ll stay ahead.

When it comes to life and career, I am inspired by a quote by James Michener, which says, “The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labour and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he’s always doing both.”

I couldn’t agree more.

A special thank you to Enactus Canada and St. Lawrence College for including me in your programming.
