Case Studies

    Aeromexico

    Project Description

In June of 2017, Brookline Public Relations (Brookline) was contracted by The Calgary Airport Authority (YYC) and Aeromexico airlines to manage the official press conference and welcome celebration of the new non-stop passenger service connecting YYC with Mexico City via Aeromexico airlines. The partnership worked towards increasing YYC’s profile as an international hub with new and exciting airline partners.

Brookline was tasked with managing multiple events with the common mandate of welcoming high profile government officials, dignitaries, corporate executives, VIP guests and media to celebrate and give recognition to Aeromexico as a new member to the airport and Alberta community.

Brookline planned, managed and executed two events for the formal welcome celebrations – an official press conference to announce the addition of the airline to YYC at the Fairmont Palliser and an evening event at a downtown event space, Hudson. Both the press conference and evening event featured authentic Mexican and Western Canadian cultural elements to showcase the new partnership between Mexico and Calgary.

To kick off the day, a press conference was hosted at the Fairmont Palliser. The historic landmark hotel was a natural destination to host Mexican delegates and travel industry professionals. With its historic charm, deep-rooted in Calgary culture, the Palliser was a great introduction to Calgary for first time travelers to the city.

The press conference featured a welcome routine by Mexican Folklore dance troupe, Viva La Danza, followed by remarks from representatives from YYC, Aeromexico and the city, including an official welcome video from Mayor Naheed Nenshi. The press conference concluded with an official ribbon cutting and a symphonic gift exchange of commissioned monarch butterfly painting to signify the migration passage that the monarch butterfly travels yearly from Canada to Mexico.

Guests were treated to an array of breakfast items including Conchas (Mexican Sweet Bread), made-to-order smoothies, dulce le leche and more. Guests left with a parting gift – a luggage tag and custom designed notebook replicating a boarding pass. Several media outlets both local and international (Mexican publications) attended the conference to cover the experience.

Brookline also managed an evening cocktail reception that was held at Calgary’s newest event space, Hudson, located on the sixth floor of the historic Hudson’s Bay building on Stephen Avenue. To tie the theme back to the airline’s Mexican roots, the food and beverage options were artfully selected to reflect the experience guests receive when they fly with Aeromexico. The guests were treated to a wide array of food options including: burritos, tacos, beef sliders, macaroni and cheese bites, churros, tre leches and many more options. Additionally, guests had the unique opportunity to learn about the intricacies of tequila from an expert who works at Anejo, a contemporary Mexican restaurant in Calgary.

The evening also included performances from the Bow Valley Fiddlers and the Chinook Country Line Dancers. Upon guests’ departure, each attendee was provided a gift bag delivered by the Calgary Stampede Royalty including the Stampede Queen, two Stampede Princesses and the Indian Princess.

For all the events listed above, Brookline managed invitations, RSVP’s and communications with government officials, corporate executives and special guests. Brookline also coordinated all event logistics and was tasked with ensuring that both the Aeromexico and YYC brands were showcased properly and prominently. All events were highly praised by both the Airport Authority and Aeromexico.

    Alberta Securities Commission

    Project Description

One in three Albertans will be approached by a possible fraud investment at some point in their life. To assist the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) and Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) in increasing awareness and providing education surrounding fraud, Brookline developed an integrated communications campaign with the launch of a new, consumer focused website, “Checkfirst.ca”.

Brookline created a multifaceted campaign using a mix of traditional and non-traditional tactics. Built on the slogan of “Check. Protect. Invest”, the creative campaign set out to encourage Albertans to educate themselves about fraud prevention. Brookline executed a national ad buy, developed the Checkfirst.ca website and has run a number of public awareness campaigns. Activations have included:

    • “There’s no such thing as a free lunch” food truck wrap campaign
    • “Don’t get tricked by fraud” Halloween campaign
    • “Don’t get burned”, a Checkfirst “Café” activation

Brookline’s campaigns have consistently drawn attention to fraud prevention, garnering traditional and social media coverage. As a result of the campaign, more than 25 publications covered the ASC, providing Albertans with greater knowledge of the risk of investment fraud.

    Brewster Travel Canada

    Project Description

Brookline Public Relations supported Brewster Travel Canada with media relations and blogger/influencer engagement support for multiple projects, including the Epic Summer Pass campaign and the grand opening of the Banff Gondola upper terminal building after a $26 million redevelopment. The Epic Summer Pass campaign offered Albertan families an affordable way to make the most of the summer months with unlimited access to five of the most spectacular attractions in the Rocky Mountains during Brewster’s 2016 operating season. The Banff Gondola once again became open to the public, providing visitors with a mountaintop experience like never before. The redevelopment included the addition of a state-of-the-art interpretive centre, new culinary offerings and an expanded rooftop observation deck.

Brookline implemented local and national media relations strategies for both campaigns, in conjunction with blogger relations strategies, to generate awareness for the Epic Pass amongst Albertans, and introduce the new upper terminal to local, national and international audiences alike. Local media and bloggers were invited to experience the Epic Summer Pass attractions for themselves, and upon the opening of the Banff Gondola, local and national media were offered the opportunity to enjoy and explore the new upper terminal for themselves at an exclusive media launch event.

Brookline’s approach in both instances provided experiential learning for the media and bloggers, as well as tailored outreach for local and national markets. As a result of Brookline’s efforts, Brewster received coverage from all major local news outlets, in Calgary as well as Banff and Canmore, and garnered exceptional coverage and online engagement from bloggers and key influencers.

    Cabela's Canada

    Project Description

Beginning with their entry to the Calgary market and most recently for the grand opening in Abbotsford, BC, Brookline was tasked with media training Cabela’s staff and media relations for each event. In both Calgary and Abbotsford, Brookline provided a package that included a half day media training session, coordination and execution of a media preview event, plus onsite media relations during the grand opening festivities.

In Calgary, Brookline trained both store management and Cabela’s executives in advance of the media-only preview, which saw dozens of Calgary journalists, bloggers and influencers attend to scope out the store before it opened to the public. Brookline arranged for Breakfast Television to shoot onsite from inside the store which included several live hits that featured Cabela’s broad range of outdoors products, its indoor archery range and the always-popular “mountain” of animal displays.

Onsite at the Calgary grand opening, Brookline coordinated multiple TV cameras, arranged interviews with Cabela’s management and executives and ensured the bloggers and influencers in attendance were provided special treatment. Extensive coverage in local TV, radio and print outlets helped to bolster the city’s excitement for the launch of the store.

Following the success of the Calgary launch, Brookline was again called upon to provide similar services for the opening of Cabela’s newest store in Canada, this time in Abbotsford, BC. In Abbotsford, two weeks prior to the public grand opening, Brookline was on-the-ground to provide media training, both education and on-camera practice, and run an invite-only media preview. Many of Lower Mainland’s most well-known bloggers and influencers from several specialities were in attendance, including those focused on parenting, lifestyle, events and outdoors sports. They were joined by local print, online and TV outlets to preview the 70,000 square foot outdoors mecca.

Brookline was onsite for the grand opening festivities, which saw thousands of people through the doors on opening day, some lining up several days in advance to be at the front of the line. Brookline liaised with local media onsite prior to and during the grand opening, which resulted in print and online video coverage of the event.

    Servus Credit Union

    Project Description

Servus Credit Union is a longstanding client of Brookline Public Relations, having partnered on multiple campaigns including its signature community engagement campaign, Servus Circle Day, and a new province-wide initiative, Servus Summer.

For Servus Circle Day, all 100+ Servus Credit Union branches across Alberta were tasked to come up with an “activity” to bring to life in their local community – all in one day. Brookline worked in 17 markets across the province to drive media attention to the activities through traditional media outreach and tailored media drops. Brookliners travelled across the province and delivered green donuts and coffee to print, radio and TV media driving excitement and coverage for Servus Circle Day.

Customized media advisories were distributed to each market, highlighting the unique activities happening in the city or town – everything from free pony rides to the Calgary Tower lit up in green. Targeted media were pitched to come and check out the activities in their market, as well as speak to a local spokesperson about the initiative, resulting in ample media coverage.

Most recently Brookline teamed with Servus to promote the Escape the Bank campaign – a mobile escape room styled as an old vintage bank featured at multiple community events across Alberta as part of the Servus Summer initiative.

The campaign aimed to challenge Albertans to use their problem-solving skills and brain power to escape the rigid, square structure of a traditional bank with its mobile escape room. Strategy to generate media interest for the mobile escape room included a comprehensive media outreach plan to secure traditional media coverage and a blogger relations program in the Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer and Lethbridge markets. The campaign resulted in 48 pieces of prominent media coverage across all four markets. Television coverage included Global News Calgary, CTV News and City News in Edmonton, CTV News Lethbridge, and radio coverage included 660 News in Calgary and iNews 880 in Edmonton. The campaign also garnered valuable online and social media exposure for the brand, with 22 pieces of online stories, including blog attention from seven influential bloggers.

Brookline secured strong coverage across the province using these tactics, demonstrating our strong relationships with media in both rural areas and metro centres and our ability to drive coverage in any market – big or small.

Given this campaign was a Sobeys’ branded event, Brookline recommended leveraging key media contacts and bloggers to help speak to the charitable initiative and act as ambassadors on behalf of Sobeys. Brookline secured coverage from traditional, trade, online and social media across 17 markets, with over 100 stories being published throughout the country on both local and national scales.

    TELUS Spark

    Project Description

Brookline supported TELUS Spark, Calgary’s reimagined science centre, with the introduction of its new market-style café, Social Eatery by Roger Mooking and its new exclusive catering partner, charbar. In partnership with TELUS Spark and internationally renowned-chef, Roger Mooking, Brookline organized a series of launch events, managed media relations and developed social media and influencer engagement strategies to introduce the new dining and catering options to a variety of audiences including VIP’s, key industry pundits and most importantly, kids!

The enhanced culinary experience at TELUS Spark was first unveiled through a soft launch of Social Eatery by Roger Mooking where guests were encouraged to try the new offerings. This was followed by an exclusive VIP event where media and local influencers were invited to try the elevated food options and see the newly renovated space. The next industry-focused event was centred around the new catering offerings available through charbar and showcased how different spaces at TELUS Spark could be transformed to facilitate any event. The final event was aimed at TELUS Spark’s youngest stakeholders, its VILPs (very important little people). Media and their children were invited to partake in an exclusive cooking class hosted by Chef Mooking where they made and tasted some of the items available on the Social Eatery by Roger Mooking menu. Brookline provided event management for all three events, the pre-and post-launch social media strategy and an influencer outreach campaign to build buzz in the Calgary community.

Brookline also coordinated a full day media tour for Chef Mooking on the day of the VIP event, that included stops at Breakfast Television, CTV, CBC and Global in Calgary, in addition to interviews with the Calgary Herald, the Weather Network, Where Magazine and more. The media relations campaign also led to interviews with the likes of 660 News, Alberta Food Tours Magazine, Culinaire Magazine and Eat North leading up to the first event.

    WestJet

    Project Description

In 2004, Brookline was approached by WestJet, making it one of Brookline’s very first clients. Brookline was hired to re-build the communications team at WestJet, in addition to drafting an overall communications strategy for the company. As WestJet grew, Brookline was vital in the development of internal and external public relations communication initiatives. These initiatives included, but were not limited to: crisis communications, issues management, drafting content for flight magazines and providing media training for all levels of staff from the President and CEO to pilots and facility crews.

As a result of Brookline’s solid communication support, WestJet was able to develop communication strategies and practices that solidified it as a leading Canadian airline with a reputation for outstating corporate and external communications and practices.

    YYC Calgary Airport Authority

    Project Description

Brookline helped plan and execute the Calgary Airport Authority’s Run and Roam the Runway, a two-day event that allowed the public, politicians, celebrity guests and media to experience the runway before its inaugural flight on June 28, 2014.

Run the Runway took place on the first day of the weekend-long event. In partnership with the Running Room, the fun-run offered participants the chance to run or walk on the new runway. Brookline secured appearances by the HeeBee-JeeBees, BodyBreak’s Joanne Macleod and Hal Johnson, Mayor Nenshi and other government officials. All proceeds raised from the run benefited KidSport, a charity that focuses on providing all children with the chance to participate in organized sports.

The festivities continued the following day with Roam the Runway, a family-friendly event that included local vendors YYC Food Trucks, Carnival for Kids and Special Event Rentals. Guests were treated to a special appearance by WestJet’s Disney plane and a sneak peak of the new Air Canada Boeing 787 Dreamliner. In addition, aviation enthusiasts were able to explore new and vintage aircrafts.

Through Brookline’s comprehensive event plan and media campaign, the Run brought more than 1,400 participants to the runway, while the Roam event welcomed more than 7,000 guests. The event was well-received by both the public and media, and garnering positive feedback on social media platforms. Additionally, the event saw 47 local and national media hits, including coverage on CBC, the Calgary Herald, CTV and Global.
